The causes and the modalities of the access to the emergency hospital department of 155 children during a mean period of 7.5 years has been evaluated. Hospital admission was more frequent when the children were referred to the hospital by the paediatrician but was rare after the spontaneous access to the emergency department. The improper, direct, utilization of the emergency departments seems to be related to a low social status and to a poor relationship with the family paediatrician. Several possible solutions to ameliorate the utilization of emergency hospital department are discussed, mainly based on different interactions between families, general paediatricians and hospital operators.
