A nutritional education program was carried out during school year 1993-4 by the child health services of a health authority in Lombardia. An ad hoc committee was established to analyse the dietary patterns of school children inside and outside school and to set up dietary guidelines. On this basis, new diets were introduced in schools including fruit for the mid-morning snack. Nutritional education was given to families through meetings and an educational booklet. Practicing paediatricians were involved in the implementation and the evaluation of the program. The program was shown to be feasible and acceptable by families and schools. It was effective in changing some inadequate dietary habits such as the use of commercial snacks and to restrict the use of special diets to cases with particular nutritional needs.
